After a standout career at St Petersburg Junior College, John Brogle moved on to Florida State University, where he set the school record in the 880-yard run and served as team captain during the 1966 season. Upon graduation he began a career as coach, first at Clearwater Oak Grove Junior High School and then at St. Petersburg Catholic High School (nee Bishop Barry). Brogle's cross-country teams at St. Pete Catholic won FHSAA-3A titles in 1972 and 1975. Returning to his collegiate alma mater, in 1977 Brogle became head cross-country coach and an assistant track coach at Florida State University. Brogle's cross-country teams won three Metro Conference titles and in 1981 finished eighth at the NCAA championships, still the high-water mark for Seminole cross country. Also during his tenure, the FSU track squad placed third at the NCAA championships in 1980, a finish which would stand as the Seminoles' best ever for over a quarter century.

After leaving FSU in the mid-1980s, Brogle worked overseas in the United States Department of Defense school system, spending most of the last thirteen years of his life in Okinawa.
